Oblivion starring the completely sane Tom Cruise

First off, Tom Cruise is certifiably crazy in my humble opinion (yeah, I write that crap out because I’m not lazy). That aside, I like this movie. It’s a cool little sci-fi movie that’s got a very bleak feel almost reminiscent of a “stuck in a haunted house” type of horror film for the first half of it.

Andrea Riseborough working an outpost terminal on a post invasion Earth. Ahhh the life of a future slave looks cushy.

Our story takes place on a post invasion Earth in the year 2145 where there was a massive battle with aliens in the past. We won the war but the planet was devastated. Tom Cruise and Andrea Riseborough deliver a decent performance as outpost technicians serving the wealthy earthlings that have left the planet awaiting the day that they too will join the others.

Any movie with Morgan Freeman is a friend of mine. Now that you know he’s in it you kinda have to see it.

Like I said this movie is a bunch of fun and I dig it. It’s what I call a good background movie. I can throw it on and I don’t have to pay too much attention to it to enjoy it. There’s a bit of a twist in the film when Olga Kurylenko shows up… oh and Morgan Freeman is in it which means you’re kind of obligated to at least give it a chance.

This movie’s strong point is it’s production for sure. It’s chock full of fantastic effects scenes and very cool realistic looking sets.

The meat of this movie is cool but it drags a little for me. Not a deal breaker since it’s a bleakly styled movie and that’s to be expected. There’s a decent ending that I don’t hate but it is pretty predictable as is most of the movie. All in all it’s a recommend for sure and like I said a great background movie. In fact it’s on in the background right now as I type this.

Summary

From your favorite lunatic and mine, Tom Cruise delivers a decent performance as Jack the maintenance man on a war-torn devastated Earth.
